My COLLECTION of words!

You are either a person who enjoys collecting things or you are not.
When I was growing up I played with different “collections”. My earliest collection was trolls (The silly looking creatures with crazy colored hair). When I collected all I wanted or they lost there value to me I moved onto another collection… My collections ranged from beanie babies to spoons to barbies. None of these collections still intact today.

In the present I am not a collector of any one material thing. Although my husband would probably disagree and show you to my closet where he will point out my collection of shoes, handbags, belts and clothing, my response - clearly not a collection just an occupational hazard of working in retail.

Instead of collecting material things I collect words.
This is something that has just happened. It wasn't something I sought out to collect. Besides you are probably reading this not understanding what I even mean by saying I collect words. How can you collect words?

Let me elaborate.

  1. Books – I love to read. You suggest a book and I will give it a fair shake. I love the way the words dance on a page – It is fascinating to me.
  2. Journaling – I love to write. I have done this on my very public blog and I also write for myself, the only audience of my journal – ME. I use the words I write to reflect where I have been and where I want to go.

Words are power. I believe this with every fiber in my being. What you say to yourself manifests itself into reality.

So I created a simple habit about a year ago.
I committed to spending 15 minutes a day on me and my personal development. The 15 minutes I delegated to myself was spent finding a quote or a story that would motivate me forward.
The thing I love about inspiring quotes is they pack so MUCH wisdom in so few words. Some are mind and heart opening – Just reading them has the power to give you an “ah ha” moment.
So I made the decision that during my 15 minute a day habit I would document each quote and write about each story. I did this so I would have a collection of words that spoke directly to me. This way at any time I could reflect and come back to each quote, lesson and story I collected.

Today I am sharing my collection of words with you as well as what I am calling my journey confessions.

As I look back on this collection that I have created I am reminded and pulled back to different seasons in my life.
Seasons of leadership, seasons or growth, seasons of uncertainty, seasons of change and seasons of illness. There is no order to how this collection was pulled together. Each day I was pulled toward different subjects, sometimes I would pause on a particular subject longer… then I moved on.

Navigate this post as you wish…
Happy hunting for the words that move and speak specifically to you. I believe there is something in here for someone, somewhere.

(Be warned these quotes live on a 28 page word document - this is lengthy. In fact there are so many GREAT quotes this post is pin worthy)!

Confession #1
I HEART Oprah. I have had her show recording on my DVR for years. I used to take 2 hours a week and hand pick which Oprah Winfrey Show’s I was going to indulge in. I couldn't help it. I turned to her when I was in need of a good-soul cleansing “ugly cry”.
Oprah opened my eyes to see my life from new perspectives by introducing me to other everyday people like me who were leading extraordinary lives.
Did she ever get on my nerves – Yes; who doesn't but I always go back to the tiny lessons that lived within a show. The reassurance that I am good enough even when I fear that I am not and lastly the belief that I matter and I can make a difference in this huge world of ours.
So I dug through my journals and picked a few lessons and wisdom that I picked up from either her or her amazing guest:
  1. Use your life to serve the world (Blessed to be a blessing)
  2. Turn your wounds into wisdom
  3. Be your best self
  4. When you know better, you do better – Maya Angelou
  5. I trust that everything happens for a reason, even if we are not wise enough to see it
  6. When your child enters the room, does your face light up? – Toni Morrison
  7. What God intended for you goes FAR beyond anything you can imagine
  8. Take responsibility for the energy you bring to me. (Dr. Jill Bolt Taylor)
  9. We often block our own blessings because we don't recognize we're worthy enough.
  10. Choose love over fear.
  11. Nobody but you is responsible for your life.

To follow with my confession #1 here are some of my favorite Oprah Winfrey Quotes:
For everyone of us that succeeds, it's because there's somebody there to show you the way out. The light doesn't always necessarily have to be in your family; for me it was teachers and school.                                                                 Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey

Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.
Oprah Winfrey

The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.
Oprah Winfrey

Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.
Oprah Winfrey

I am a woman in process. I'm just trying like everybody else. I try to take every conflict, every experience, and learn from it. Life is never dull.
Oprah Winfrey

Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.
Oprah Winfrey

The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.
Oprah Winfrey

Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment. Own it.
Oprah Winfrey

Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.
Oprah Winfrey

The struggle of my life created empathy - I could relate to pain, being abandoned, having people not love me.
Oprah Winfrey

I believe that every single event in life happens in an opportunity to choose love over fear.
Oprah Winfrey

Thanks OPRAH!

No ordinary work done by a man is either as hard or as responsible as the work of a woman who is bringing up a family of small children; for upon her time and strength demands are made not only every hour of the day but often every hour of the night.                                                                                                  Theodore Roosevelt

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

“People with clear, written goals, accomplish far more in a shorter period of time than people without them could ever imagine.”

Confession #2 GOAL SETTING
As you have probably noticed there is a common theme among a lot of the quotes listed… HAVE A GOAL!
For years I have read leadership books and listen to others teach on goal setting… Zig Ziglar usually mentions what he refers to as “the wheel of life”. This wheel represents each area of our lives. He believes that in order for our lives to be successful we must address each area.
The spokes of the wheel are as follows:
  1. Spiritual
  2. Family
  3. Physical
  4. Financial
  5. Intellectual
  6. Career
  7. Social

I believe he is correct. You have to set goals carefully and most importantly INTENTIONALLY in every one of these area’s.
Some area’s may come more naturally to you but what I have learned or am learning is that each require intentional effort. Regardless of how easy or hard they are for you… This is what will help me and you live a balanced life.
If you choose to leave one “spoke” of the wheel flat, you will have a flat tire and a flat tire will take more effort to roll your life forward. Don’t believe me think of a car with a flat tire…
Goal Setting:
“Goals are not wishes, dreams, or even visions. Goals are bringing those things down to earth, and with our feet firmly planted – we begin to take action steps to make our dreams come true”
What goes into making a goal:
  1. Goals must be specific and Goals must be measurable
  2. Goals must have a time limit
  3. Goals must be YOUR GOALS
  4. Goals must be in writing
“WRITE THE VISION AND MAKE IT SIMPLE” – the written goal is the breakfast of champions. You can not do big things without making your goals specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound and of course in writing. Remember the acronym SMART!

S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Achievable
R = Relevant
T = Time-bound

This lesson can and should be applied to all of the spokes in your wheel.

“The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight but no vision” Hellen Keller
  • Being able to “see” is a skill that must be present or developed
  • People with no vision simply have jobs; they exist but are not going anywhere because they are not aware that there is anywhere to go.
  • In Proverbs the Bible says “Where there is no vision the people perish”
Goals convert vision into energy  When you lay out exactly what you want to do in detail, you immediately start feeling the room move and the earth shake.

“Goals help make great men” – J.C. Penney

“You become what you think about, this is the strangest secret”

“A goal is a dream with a deadline.” Napolean Hill

“The harder I work, the luckier I get.” – Gary Player

Success is 99% attitude and 1% aptitude.

Try and fail but don’t fail to try

You give what you give, what you don’t give is lost forever, this day will never come again

Just say to yourself... how bad do I want this? Am I working harder than the person who will be standing next to me?

The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer.

CHANGE DEPENDS ON YOUR CHOICES

If you are always at the head of your class – then you are in the wrong classes

The greatest composer does not set to work because he is inspire, but becomes inspired because he is working
Ernest Newman

I am such a STRONG believer in people and in human potential – not only in others but also myself that I don’t want to put a lid on it by setting goals that are too small.

I will end my post with a lesson I learned on my “word” hunting journey.
A LOT CAN HAPPEN IN A YEAR
This is important to remember and something I have to remind myself of every day. Utilize your one year (a simple 52 weeks) to work for you to your advantage. If you don’t it will work against you… It is a simply lesson in compounded interest, but I can save that for an entirely separate post.
This past year of self discovery has change me and has put me on a new course than originally planned (more to come on this).

Just think about where you could be in a year from know if you would just…
  • Write a 1,000 words weekly – you will be able to complete a full novel or simply publish a few e-books
  • Spent time in the gym you can drop that weight you always talk about losing
We have all heard the saying “yesterday you said tomorrow” Don’t let that be you! Everyday you need to remind yourself that today is the day for you to make a change.

Time is our friend and our enemy how we chose to spend it determines which one it will be to us.

Be Blessed –

10 Years....

Mason, It is amazing how time passes by in the blink of an eye after you have kids…. It seems like just yesterday, yet this week, 10 years have passed since our life was turned upside down. The day our world took a turn we never saw coming. Each year leading up to the anniversary, I get anxious, emotional, sad, scared, and angry. I WISH 10 years later I felt differently. But I don’t. It almost feels just as raw as the day we were told…. This year. I am consciously recognizing what it is… MONDAY FEBRUARY 11 th ,2008. We sat in a room where a Doctor carefully articulated and explained to us about your special heart. There is one detail about this day I have seemed to forget in time. That is the name of the doctor who told us about our fate…. I could describe to you in details about anything else you might want to know, who was there, what we were wearing, what the Doctor himself looked like and the conversation we had. Yet his name, which used to be

Loaded Diaper?!?!?

Today's post title comes to you from the one and only Greg Garka... Thanks for the idea babe! As far as Mason is concernced today was another good day for our little man! We made our goal and got up and went on a total of three walks. The last walk of the night he spotted the “playroom” and was interested so we stopped and visited with our neighbors while he played. It was the highlight of the day. His appetite decreased today but that is to be expected since he hadn’t yet had a bowel movement (in 6 days)– however about 60 minutes ago things changed in that department and I am happy to report his bowels are working and back in action… During his echo he was again a crowd pleaser and was on his best behavior. The technician said that he was the best 3 year old she has done. It is so funny; he gets upset when something is about to happen and he doesn’t understand what. He tells us he is scared and then after we explain to him what they are going to do and that it won’t hurt –

Our Day at Children's

Hello all, Kelsey and I spent the morning at Children's Hopsital in Seattle today, what a place! They sure do a good job of trying to make the kids feel comfortable...part of me didn't even feel like I was at a hospital. We met with a Cardiologist, Dr. Vernon, and a Paranaetologist, Dr. Holmgren (yes, Mike Holmgren's daughter). Both of them were very nice and extremely informational. Dr. Vernon did confirm that Mason has HLHS and is a candidate for the Fontan Operations, which are the three stage surgeries he will have to go through to get his heart working as normal as possible. Kelsey and I have been talking about where we would want to do the surgeries in case we weren't comfortable with Seattle Children's. We knew going in that Children's in Seattle is one of the premeir hospitals in the country, but weren't sure how they were compared to other hospital's like University of Michigan with this particular heart disease. I'm glad to say that w
